Expert SAP Assessor helping you navigate the complexities
of Building Regulations compliance

What is a SAP Calculation?

The Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is the only Government-approved methodology used to estimate the energy performance of residential dwellings.  Also referred to as SAP Assessments, SAP Certificates, or SAP Ratings, these assessments are used to:

Demonstrate compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document Part L
A SAP Calculation is required whether you’re designing a new extension with extensive glazing, constructing a new build or converting an existing building into residential units.

Generate an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for new builds and conversions, which advise occupants, prospective buyers, landlords and tenants of a property’s energy performance.

At Rosier Energy, we work closely with you to ensure your property’s insulation, air tightness, and heating strategies are designed to achieve compliance.

How do SAP Calculations work?

Starting your SAP Calculation early in the design phase can save you both time and money, allowing for necessary adjustments before construction begins.

To carry out the calculation we will need:

  • Design drawings: Scaled floor plans, elevations, sections, and a site plan.
  • Construction specifications: Details of walls, floors, roofs, windows, doors, and insulation.
  • Mechanical and electrical specifications
  • Renewable technologies specifications and other factors impacting energy use and CO2 emissions.

We use specialised SAP software to assess your design’s compliance with Building Regulations. If the initial design doesn’t meet the required standards, we’ll suggest cost-effective adjustments, such as improved insulation, higher performance glazing or heating system upgrades, to help you achieve compliance. Once finalised, the design will be used to produce the necessary SAP Calculations reports and U-value calculations for Building Control.

After construction is complete on a new build or conversion, we’ll update the SAP Calculations to reflect any changes and issue your Energy Performance Certificate – which is all included in our fee.

SAP Calculations FAQ

With SAP Calculations conducted entirely from your drawings, whether your project is local or anywhere else in the UK, there’s no need for a site visit.

Typically, a SAP Calculation takes just 7 days. However, for larger or more complex projects, we’ll provide a tailored timeline once we review your drawings.

Since 2007, it has been a legal requirement for all buildings to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) before they can be built, sold, or let. An EPC rates your property’s energy efficiency from A (highly efficient) to G (not efficient) and provides recommendations for improvement.

Only an accredited On Construction Domestic Energy Assessor (OCDEA) can carry out a SAP Calculation. Rosier Energy is proud to be fully accredited and insured with Elmhurst Energy, the UK’s leading accreditation scheme.
